Releasing and marketing your own books is a hard business. Here I have compiled a list of some of the sites and services that I have found are really helping me to connect to readers, both as a way of a thank you, and as a way to help other authors who may stumble across this page!
Author Marketing Club.

A comprehensive resource for authors, with both paid and free
opportunites to promote your work, plus tips and links on all things publishing! Click on the image to give them a visit.
The 'facebook' of books! A great place to meet other authors and readers and join in book discussions. Some good promotional opportunites for those willing to join in. Click on the image to view my profile, from there you can take a look around the site!
Facebook Author Pages
It's worth making use of a facebook author page if you are already a member. More suited to retaining fans and enhancing your promotion than reaching new people, but worth it all the same, and easy to set up. This image will take you to my page.
Pinterest and Other Links
I've linked all the various book blog / review sites to a board on my pinterest site. Pinterest itself is a handy tool for doing this kind of thing. If you click through via the image, check out the boards to see who has featured and reviewed my book. Thay have all been friendly, easy to deal with and free!
There are literally hundreds of sites that offer reviews and features for your book, many free and many paid. My Pinterest boards will link you to ones I've had success with, but there are many more out there. My advice, start with the free ones, and treat any paid promos with care (start with a small advert package if possible, and see how it goes).
I have only just started on my journey and am still trying to find the best sites and activities to reach 'my' audience. I haven't mentioned Twitter above, as it isn't specifically for authors, but that is one of my main channels for sharing reviews and links. If you want to see how I go about it, my twitter link is at the top of the page.
